Description: Pyne Wood is a delightful mixed woodland consisting of grand Scots pine to the west and younger conifer and broadleaf regeneration to the east, including spruce, birch, alder, willow, rowan, ash, beech and oak amongst others. Two shallow wildlife ponds, the larger one created in the past using the good red clay soils and the smaller one resulting from a confluence of drains, provide wetland habitat diversity. The ponds harbour water plants with rushes and reeds around the edges, which in turn have attracted amphibians, dragonflies, aquatic insects and other invertebrates in abundance. A rich woodland ground flora is evident with fungi such as bay bolettes, fly agaric and plants including nectar rich heather and broom on which bees and butterflies are seen feeding in season, with ferns and liverworts. The land is mostly level or very gently sloping with rougher walking ground to the east.
Internal access is provided by a mowed track alongside the main internal drain giving useful access between the younger and older wooded areas, and there is a disused highseat adjacent to this path that could be restored for wildlife observation. A private ridestop entrance and long section of shared private access track to the south provides good scope for taking further internal accesses into the regenerating woodland area.
Access: is off the B974, through a single gate, and along approx. 250m of a shared private hard track along the southern boundary, over which there is a full right of access for all purposes. A right of access for timber stacking purposes extends over a strip of land adjacent to the start of this shared access track.
Sporting Rights: These are owned and included with the land.
Special Rights/Wayleaves: a right is reserved for the benefit of the retained land to clean the main open water drain through the middle, and along the northern boundary, of Pyne Wood.
Thornton Woodlands: which Pyne Wood is part of, are situated in idyllic, historic and very peaceful rural surroundings. The trees are a diverse mixture of species and ages and have been sympathetically managed. Currently mature Scots pine, young spruce and birch are dominant, but there are significant areas of mixed broadleaves including rowan, oak and alder. Red squirrels, deer, hare with lots of small mammals and birds including woodpecker inhabit the woods. There are grants for encouraging capercaille which occupied the area until recent times.
Surrounding Area: Nearby are the tourist villages of Edzell, with its hidden "rocks of solitude" walk along the North Esk river, and Fettercairn with its working distillery. Slightly further afield are Glamis Castle and Lunan Bay beach and the fishing town of Montrose. Dundee and Aberdeen are each approximately 35 mins drive.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and the adjoining woodland.
