You are here: Home > Buying a Wood > Northern Scotland > Score Wood - SOLD
Description: Score Wood is a mature Scots pine woodland with interspersed mixed broadleaves lying in scenic rural forestry surrounds on the Highland and Moray borders. The eastern half of Score Wood is replanted ancient woodland (PAWS), with plantings having taken place in the 1950s and 1960s. The pine trees remaining after the thinnings of the last 10 years are of good form and widely spaced allowing easy walking and lots of sunlight to filter through from all directions. The broadleaves set amongst the pine are both mature and young regeneration and include birch, hazel coppice, sycamore, rowan, holly and ash. The ground here is largely level and dry, and consists of rich sandy red clay soils under grass and pine needles. The western half is a thicker stand of maturing pine and broadleaves with some recent logging piled up for wood or campfire fuel. This thinner stretch of the woodland rests on a gentle gradient with northwesterly views across open farmland.
Access to Score Wood is excellent and directly off the quiet B9007 public road with tracks at each end and one in the middle. There is also a padlocked ride stop gate just to the east of the middle of the wood leading to a potential private parking/camping area further in amongst the trees. Neighbouring farms including Score Farm and Logie Farm have a right of access over the three hardstanding access tracks.
Wayleaves: There is a small overhead electricity wire crossing the wood.
Mineral Rights: These are owned and included with the land except where reserved by statute.
Sporting rights: These are owned and included with the land.
Surrounding Area: Score Wood lies in the lower Findhorn River Valley which is renowned for salmon fishing, canoeing and the spectacular gorge scenery through which the river runs. Randolph's Leap is a popular local geological spot on the river and the Dava Way trail passing nearby is good for walkers or cyclists exploring the wider area. Outside the river valley, the land is a mosaic of farms, forests, heath moorland and lochs providing a haven for indigenous wildlife including raptors, pine marten, red squirrel, red deer and Scottish crossbill. The Findhorn Valley in general (also known as the 'Valley of the Raptors') and surrounding areas, including the Cairngorms National Park and Moray Firth, are indeed a wildlife watcher's paradise. The attractive and historic Royal Burghs of Forres and Nairn and the beach at Findhorn are within 12-15 miles to the north. The City of Inverness, Aviemore resort and the Spey Valley are all within 30-45 minutes' drive.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
