You are here: Home > Buying a Wood > Northern Scotland > Stravaig Wood - SOLD
Description: Stravaig Wood is a fine wood to 'wander about' in and marvel at the wonders of nature - hence its name. The more open upper area combines mixed conifers (mainly spruce and pine) with birch glades and has a good sized parking area and main clearing to base oneself. From here, there is a network of nature paths (as shown on the detailed map) accessing all four corners of the wood. Look out for signs of deer and territorial markings on trees: buck will thrash their antlers especially in autumn, and you can listen out for and try to identify the different bird calls and songs.
Descending gently lower down, after crossing an open ditch which bisects the wood, you pass through denser woodland until you are rewarded with meeting some majestic old birch trees and glades on the fringe of the heather moss/bog curtilage. The birch tree improves soil and together with the heath area birch often favours the growth of herbs and grasses which are less common outside woods. There are different grasses, blaeberry, bog myrtle, common heather and bryophytes such as sphagnum moss. There are views to Schiehallion mountain and across to Torr Mor where raptors are often seen gliding and circling overhead.
Internal access for vehicles is provided via a compacted stony track leading to a secluded clearing in the wood (as shown on the map below).
Access: From the B847 into the large open area, then through the metal gate where there is a full right of access over the shared private track along the entire southwest boundary of Marten Wood. About half way along the length of this access track there is a ridestop entrance on the right giving internal vehicular access into the wood.
Sporting Rights: These are fully owned and included with the land.
Surrounding area: Marten Wood is part of the old Creag Dhubh Forestry Estate which is situated just above Dunalastair Water on the lower south-eastern slopes of corbett Beinn a' Chuallaich. The surrounding area is renowned for its natural highland beauty including the ancient Caledonian Pine woods (Black Woods of Rannoch), series of Lochs (Rannoch and Tummel), cascading rivers (Tummel and Garry) and classic conical shaped munro (Schiehallion). The area offers a range of opportunities for land or water based outdoor pursuits from hill-walking to mountaineering to boating. Local native wildlife includes grouse, red deer, red squirrels, pine martens, capercaillie, cross-bill and various birds of prey. There are also many interesting fungi, insects, birds, lichens and other plants indicating a healthy and diverse ecosystem and making the area a mecca for conservationists and biologists. Creag Dhubh is a wonderful spot in which to relax, feel the senses come alive and take in some of the purest air and most beautiful scenery in Scotland.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
