Description: Maddie Wood is a very peaceful and secluded semi-natural ancient oak and young spruce woodland teeming with wildlife. It is an ideal retreat for observing nature, woodland conservation, small scale forestry and relaxation. Red squirrel, red deer, various raptors, greater spotted woodpeckers, woodcock, bats and much else thrive in this mixed environment of mature broadleaves and young conifers. The areas of coppiced oak, ash, birch and some huge Norway spruce are a haven for beetles and other insects, fungi, and lichens, all indicators of a healthy and complete woodland ecosystem. In spring carpets of bluebells, ramsons (wild garlic) and clusters of primroses adorn these grounds in the area above the burn.
The tree species is roughly two thirds spruce planted since 1998 on the gentler upper grounds, with the remaining ancient woodland descending to an old path just above and parallel to the burn flowing along the northern boundary. The separate northwest area of Maddie Wood includes both sides of the burn. There are good vantage points for views across the glens at the parking area and open areas shown circled in brown on the detailed map.
Access: External access is via a hard stone private track leading off the A714 over which there is a shared legal all-purpose vehicular right of access, shown green on the maps. Internal access is provided by a new stone track extending about 40m into the heart of the wood and some new and old nature paths.
Sporting Rights: These are included with the land.
Mineral Rights: These are owned and included with the land except where reserved by statute.
Surrounding Area: Maddie Wood is situated at the top of the Daljarrock Forest in mixed woodland and rural hillside settings in the pretty River Stinchar valley. There is a great variety of wildlife in the valley, including red squirrel, red deer, roe deer, otters, badgers and reptiles, and birds from blue tits to buzzards, plover to peregrine. Many nearby walks and the tranquil unspoilt environment make the area perfect for nature and general outdoor enthusiasts. A walk up Knockdolian Hill provides panoramic land and sea views and the new long-distance walking route - The Carrick Way - is scheduled to open very shortly. The huge Galloway and Carrick Forests can be explored further to the east and an early spring wildlife festival takes place in neighbouring Dumfries & Galloway every year. The coastal town of Girvan, and shingle beaches at Woodland and Ballantrae Bay, are within 10 miles to the West. Nearby Pinwherry and Barrhill villages have local services whilst Colmonell and Dailly have forestry mills/suppliers. Ayr, Stranraer and Newton Stewart are within 30 miles.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries: The boundaries are clearly indicated with red markings on posts and some trees around the woodland. The centre of the burn denotes the northern boundary apart from the small separate area above the large culvert pipe where it is denoted by the fence boundary either side of the burn.
You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself - please take these sales details with you, and do remember to check that it is still available. If you have seen the woodland and wish to be accompanied on a second more detailed visit please contact our local manager.
