Steele Brig Wood is an interesting deciduous ancient woodland site made up of two separate sections. A wetter area suitable for fishing and enjoying river wildlife extends some 140m along the south riverbank of the River Ayr and a dryer area of woodland rises above the track. Formerly part of the Gadgirth Estate, the land has been managed in previous years but has developed naturally in recent times into a mature woodland habitat  where beech, elm, willow, oak, hazel and ash trees are predominant. Located in rural surroundings, there are fields to the south and north, and woodland to the east and west of most of Steele Brig Wood. Neighbouring Gadgirth Bridge, after which Steele Brig Wood is named, was originally built in 1768 by the then estate manager Rev John Steele, who was much admired for land improvement works during his tenure. The picturesque Enterkine Viaduct and the first ‘source to sea’ walking route in Scotland, the River Ayr Way, are close by.  

Access:  There are full rights of access over a shared track leading off the B742 and bisecting Steele Brig Wood, as shown in green on the detailed map. 

Fishing and sporting rights:  The fishing rights to the river Ayr are excluded for salmon and sea trout but are included for all other species of fish. However there is the opportunity of  joining Ayr River Angling Club AYRAC who have access to the river bank and own the salmon and sea trout rights, to fish for these.  There are areas of riverbank suitable for launching small boats or canoes to add to the enjoyment of the woodland. Mineral Rights:  These are owned and included with the land except where reserved by statute.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
