Broad Ash Wood is secluded within an oasis called Great Chattenden Wood, in the heavily populated Medway district, only thirty miles from central London. This whole woodland area has been protected because of its Site of Special Scientific Interest status. According to Natural England, this SSSI status is due to its “‘coppice with standards on London Clay’, which is a rather scarce habitat in Kent. In the nineteenth century the woodland here was renowned for its many varieties of butterfly. Recently a survey showed twenty varieties still in the area, including the Orange Tips and Purple Hairstreak.
Broad Ash Wood has a limited amount of hazel and ash coppice. The main trees here are maturing oak and ash standards growing close together amongst the hazel, birch, hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple and willow under storey. As well as a good stoned track for access, there is also a shared grassy track along the western side, giving access to a private clearing near the edge of the wood.
The owner of Broad Ash Wood will have vehicle rights of way along the tracks on the map marked in green, and keys to enable access at all times.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
