A lovely wood enclosed on two sides by a quiet sunny country lane. It holds many surprises. A minor wayleave admits yet more light, and helps to attract butterflies and other invertebrates to the wood with a carpet of many different wildflowers including primroses, ground ivy, yellow archangel and foxgloves. Further in, ancient wood banks support gnarled hornbeam and oak, and skirt a seasonal streambed. Amongst the planting carried out in the last few years there are three young thriving wild service trees.
The east of the wood (named ‘the wildwood’ by the owner) consists mainly of ash and birch. There is also hazel, hawthorn, cherry, field maple and goat willow here.
In recent years the owner of the wood has allowed the wood to evolve naturally with only some careful intervention. This certainly has given the wood a great feel, as a ‘nature reserve’ and judging by the existence of many animal tracks and sounds, the wildlife in the area appear to have greatly appreciated this approach.
To the west, amongst the mature oak and hornbeam, is a mixture of younger oak, ash, cherry, silver birch and field maple, surrounding some most attractive clearings, which are carpeted with bluebells in the spring.
Like much of the surrounding woodland, Mount Wood is a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), and also carries a Tree Preservation Order.
The owner of Mount Wood will have a key to the gate at B.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
