Parson Wood - SOLD

Parson Wood is easily accessible, a few miles away from the A2, and approximately 7 miles south east of Canterbury. It is less than an hour’s drive from the M25. Good stoned tracks provide level access off the quiet country lane, and the ride stop entrance from the stoned track on the south side of the wood allows an owner to park their car within the wood.

The wood consists of four compartments, separated by two internal tracks, one of which runs north-south and the other east-west through the wood. These allow the owner to access all areas of their wood as required. The four compartments are mainly sweet chestnut coppice, which was last cut nineteen to twenty-one years ago. The north-west and south-east compartments have a wider range of mixed broadleaf coppice including hazel. Many other tree varieties are flourishing amongst the coppice, including sycamore, birch, field maple, hazel, aspen, beech, wild cherry and horse chestnut. Above the coppice is a canopy in places of mature oak standards.

The boundary on the west side of the wood includes a stretch of young growing coppice with small open spaces. This has created a good natural butterfly habitat in places and many varieties can be seen, including common blue, green hairstreak, red admiral, wood brown, meadow brown and brimstone (as seen in the photo). A diverse range of wildflowers also thrive in this area including yellow archangel, teasel, centaury, willow herb and the forest floor is abundant with bluebells and wood anemone in the spring.

The woods also attract many birds – buzzards have been spotted overhead but there are also reports of green and great spotted woodpecker in the woods.

On the right-hand side of the track that leads from the entrance into the wood there is a path that has been cleared, leading past an old crab apple tree to a clearing with a chestnut bench. This is a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the tranquillity of Parson Wood or set up camp for the night to enjoy some wild camping with friends or family.

Natural England designates Parson Wood as an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW). This means it has been woodland since at least 1600AD.

We are fortunate to have two useful studies, which were undertaken by professionals. These are both on the whole of Ileden Woods, of which Parson Wood is a small part. The Management Plan has been written by a qualified and experienced forestry professional to indicate a way in which lleden Wood as a whole might be managed, but only you can know what you want to achieve and what your resources are. The Management Plan is not mandatory, but it is full of good advice, and a lot of background information which will certainly be interesting and useful. We also have a report from our Professional Adviser Prof. Julian Evans, author of “Getting Started in a Wood of Your Own”. The report covers the wider area of Ileden Wood and again, advice is not compulsory. Please bear in mind that not everything in either of them applies to the particular area of lleden Wood which is Parson Wood.

The cathedral city of Canterbury is approximately 7 miles away and include the stunning Westgate Gardens and also offer an opportunity to do some punting on the Great Stour. For those interested in wildlife, with over 400 animals, Howletts Wild Animal Park is well worth a visit and is within a 15-minute drive.

Parson Wood has recently been named after the narrator of one of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
