Nestling in the shelter of the South Downs, Raft Wood has much of what you would want for a woodland retreat. On the west side lies a pond of about half an acre. This pond is fed by a small stream, on the east side, that runs through a gentle valley in the wood. Here the hazel coppice, extensively carpeted with bluebells, is drawn up by the presence of some fine oak and ash standards. Crab apple, rowan, dogwood, hawthorn and field maple are also to be found here. To the south of the woods are wonderful views of the South Downs. Along much of the southern border of the wood is an area that has been cut to a low level because of the presence of small overhead power lines. This means that many of the butterflies seen in these and surrounding woods find their way to this sunny area.
Raft Wood is an ancient semi-natural woodland in a Site of Nature Conservation Importance(SNCI) and within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty(AONB).
The owner of Raft Wood will have rights of way along the tracks shown in green on the map. In addition to the standard covenant there cannot be any wildfowl shooting at any time.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
