Weeks Wood - SOLD, Hants - About 4¾ acres, £69,000

Weeks Wood - SOLD

Weeks Wood, also known historically as Wakes Wood, sits on the valleyside overlooking Brightstone Lane with views to the open fields opposite. A welcome range of tree types and sizes cover the woodland: large beech, oaks and ash with smaller younger areas of larch, silver birch, hazel and hawthorn. At the higher and level ground to the south are clearings easily walked through, and in two sites chalk pits are found which have been dug in ancient times.

Classified as Ancient Replanted woodland, Weeks Wood is located in the South Downs National Park. The path along the southern boundary is also a public footpath.

The Doomsday book refers to Farringdon as Feredone which, when translated, is a fern covered hillside; much of Weeks Wood is fern covered. The most notable local, Gilbert White, was one of the first to really study ecology and his calendar from 1795 is a valuable reference point. He may well have focused his attention on the woodlands here. Gilbert White's house and garden is called The Wakes, previously occupied by the Wakes family.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
