Strauss Wood, West Lothian - About 4 ½ acres, £29,000

Strauss Wood

Strauss Wood is a mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland of over four acres that grows on relatively flat land in the West Lothian countryside.

The woodland is easily accessible using a two wheel drive car or van across the flat, well made track that leads to a private parking area within Strauss Wood. This area would suit many uses including camping, domestic firewood source or building a forestry shed or hut (subject to planning permission).

The woodland was planted almost three decades ago and as such the spruce trees are beginning to produce useful timber that could be harvested by selective thinning. This in turn would encourage the remaining trees as they further mature over the next couple of decades. The woodland boundaries have a selection of broadleaf trees that are growing well in these pleasant and more sunlit locations. The woodland also benefits from a small meadow to the northwest.

The future owner could choose how they prefer to manage the woodland, but they may wish to encourage pockets of diversity by planting additional native species: perhaps some hedging in the meadow area to provide a home for smaller birds and a habitat for pollenating insects or more traditional deciduous tree species such as ash, oak or beech.

Many species call Strauss Wood home. These include frogs, roe deer, buzzards wheeling overhead, mushrooms and wild flowers.

Strauss Wood (which incidentally was named in memory of Whitburn's clothing factory which produced four million pairs of jeans per year in the last three decades of the twentieth century) provides the opportunity to purchase some much sought after woodland in the heart of Scotland.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
