Catbrook Wood is a mixed woodland located in a peaceful Monmouthshire valley. The woodland is on a site of ancient woodland, although it is mostly Corsican Pine. The woodland is part of a larger woodland known as Ninewells Wood, named due to presence of several water wells within. Catbrook Wood contains an ancient well, which has been marked on the plan below. There is a gated parking area at the most north westerly point of the woodland just off the main road (indicated on the map).
The woodland contains a mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees, with lots of Corsican pine. Oak and birch saplings are flourishing amongst the lighter areas of the woodland, with a few larger specimens. Lower down there are holly and rhododendron, with a shrub layer of bilberry, ferns and some woodland flowers. Notable rare birds which have been seen in the woodland include yellowhammer, bullfinch, woodlark, willow tit, turtle dove, starling, song thrush, skylark, nightjar, linnet and house sparrow. Badgers, bats and deer have also been spotted. This woodland is notably rich in wildlife and will appeal to those interested in wildlife conservation.
Catbrook Wood is located near the small village of Catbrook, situated between the towns of Chepstow and Monmouth, close to the Wye Valley. The closest pub is The Lion Inn in the village of Trelleck: there are over 26 known spellings for this village, which literally translates as “three stones”. The Lion Inn offers food and accommodation. The village of Llandogo, located a few miles away along the River Wye, which offers a wide range of guest accommodation and The Sloop Inn, also has nice rooms. The wood’s location offers an ideal base for exploring the Wye Valley, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are plenty of historic sites nearby including Tintern Abbey now a spectacular ruin which was founded by Cistercian monks in 1131, and largely rebuilt in the late 13th century. It is the best-preserved medieval abbey in Wales, and an outstanding example of Gothic architecture.
There is a layby on the road a short distance away, but there is also a gated parking area with a combination padlock; those wishing to park here while viewing should phone to get the combination number. Walking down the track from the parking area will lead you to a gate on the right hand side. A public footpath runs alongside Catbrook Wood. This woodland is protected by an Article 4 Designation.
