You are here: Home > Buying a Wood > West and South Wales and Herefordshire > Cicelyford Wood
Cicelyford Wood is an unusually attractive mixed woodland located in a peaceful Monmouthshire valley. It is on a site of ancient woodland, although it does have much pine and larch. The woodland is part of Ninewells Wood, named due to presence of several water wells within. There is a gated parking area at the most south westerly point of Cicelyford Wood just off the main road (indicated on the map).
You will find a great mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees, with lots of Corsican pine, Norway Spruce and Japanese Larch. Oak and birch saplings are flourishing amongst the lighter areas of the woodland, with larger specimens interspersed amongst the conifers. Lower down there are holly and rhododendron, with a shrub layer of bilberry, ferns and some woodland flowers. Notable rare birds which have been seen recently in the woodland include yellowhammer, bullfinch, woodlark, willow tit, turtle dove, starling, song thrush, skylark, nightjar, linnet and house sparrow. Badgers, bats and deer have also been spotted. Cicelyford is notably rich in wildlife and will appeal to you if you want to promote wildlife conservation.
Access to the woodland is from either the north or south. Entering the woodland from the north takes you over a low dry stone wall onto a public footpath. This footpath spans north to south, with an additional footpath along the northern boundary heading east but walkers are good at keeping to the paths, which are lined with majestic oak trees. These contribute to a light and open feel, athough there are also some more private secluded areas.
Cicelyford Wood is located near the small village of Catbrook, between the towns of Chepstow and Monmouth, close to the Wye Valley. The closest pub is The Lion Inn in the village of Trelleck: there are over 26 known spellings for this village, which literally translates as “three stones”. The Lion Inn offers food and accommodation. The village of Llandogo, located a few miles away along the River Wye, offers a wide range of guest accommodation and The Sloop Inn also has nice rooms. The wood’s location offers an ideal base for exploring the Wye Valley, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are plenty of historic sites nearby including Tintern Abbey now a spectacular ruin which was founded by Cistercian monks in 1131, and largely rebuilt in the late 13th century. It is the best-preserved medieval abbey in Wales, and an outstanding example of Gothic architecture.
There is parking in a layby on the road a short distance away, but there is also a gated parking area with a combination padlock; those wishing to park here while viewing should phone to get the combination number. Walking down the track from the parking area will lead you to a stile on the left hand side. This woodland is protected by an Article 4 Designation.
