You are here: Home > Buying a Wood > West and South Wales and Herefordshire > Coed Hafen
Located along the eastern slopes of Craig Chwefri, Coed Hafen is predominantly a coniferous woodland with areas of mixed broadleaf, including alder, oak, willow, silver birch and hazel. Access to the woodland is via a good track which winds through the eastern part of the woodland. You will be able to park in Coed Hafen, or in a shared parking area lower down the track next to the gated entrance (see map).
Entering the woodland from the Coed Hafen parking area will take you along a woodland track which makes up the northern boundary of the woodland. A third of the way along this track a footpath leads to a clearing which would make a perfect camping or woodworking area. Heading west along the woodland track will take you to the western boundary which has spectacular views of the Craig Chwefri hills. From the clearing area, a footpath has been cut through the woodland allowing walking access. There are endless possibilities to create additional tracks thorough the spruce if desired. The fungal community within Coed Hafen is diverse and identified species include ceps, beefsteak, fly agaric and yellow stagshorn. There are edible mushrooms within this woodland, however identification is strictly a task for a suitably qualified person. An additional footpath spans the southern boundary. Parts of this path are wetland and contain a diverse range of moss and lichen, as well as ferns and bilberry.
The woodland is alive with the sounds of song birds, and some of the wildlife that has been spotted here include woodpecker, raven, owl, red kite, jay, fox and badger. There is certainly potential to undertake thinning of the area of spruce to further encourage the diversity of woodland wildlife and introduce some different tree species. Coed Hafen can be very much enjoyed for its peace and tranquillity as an area of conservation, much like the surrounding area, which is owned and managed by the National Trust.
Coed Hafen is part of a larger woodland known as Cwm Clyd, four miles from the village of Newbridge-on-Wye, which as the name suggests is located along the River Wye. Historically, Newbridge-on-Wye was a stop off point for drovers (livestock movers), as it afforded a safe crossing point over the river Wye, which eventually led the formation of a settlement. Newbridge-on-Wye is located in the middle of Wales, 7 miles south of the historic market town of Rhayader, with Builth Wells to the south, and the spa town of Llandrindod Wells in the east. The woodland offers a perfect location for exploring both England and Wales.

From the A470 Rhayader to Builth Wellls road, towards the northern end of Newbridge on Wye, take the B4358, signposted for Beulah. Follow the road for 2.5 miles until you reach a cottage on your right hand side called 'Ty Gwilym' (which has green painted window frames and eaves). Take the right hand turning directly after the cottage down a narrow lane.
Continue along this lane and where the lane forks, take the left fork. You will reach a wooden gate that belongs to the 'National Trust' (Please remember to close the gate behind you). Continue along the lane and you will see our 'Woodlands For Sale' sign on a wooden gate. Park here (please don't block the road). Alternatively, there is a parking area about 100m back along the road.
Climb over the gate and walk up the track: Coed Hafen is approximately 250m along this track, and is marked with the nameboard of the wood.
