Olway Spring, Monmouthshire - Over 4½ acres, £49,000

Olway Spring

Olway Spring is part of the larger Big Wood. It is located about halfway between the village of Raglan, with its splendid castle and the picturesque market town of Usk which can date its origins back to a Roman military settlement of AD55.

Big Wood was once part of the Cefn Tilla estate. Cefn Tilla Court, the 16th century house of the estate located in nearby Llandenny, was given to the 2nd Lord Raglan, Richard Somerset, as a testimonial to the services of his late father, Field Marshal Lord Raglan, who had been Commander in Chief in the Crimean War.

Olway Spring is private and tranquil, tucked away in the north eastern corner of Big Wood, and similar in topography and appearance to its neighbouring wood Black Tom. The stream that burbles through both woods and finally feeds into Olway Brook some miles due south, emerges out of the ground near the woodland's northern boundary and hence its name. This is a pretty wood, with a good variety of tree and plant species and the stream of course attracts and sustains a good deal of wildlife and birdlife.

There is a spectacular spread of native bluebells to dazzle the senses in the spring. They are most abundant up towards the eastern boundary and as well as these wonderful native flowers there is evidence of many more wildflowers carpeting the forest floor; celandines and wood sorrel, wood anemone, lungwort, dog violet and primrose, as well as the woodland staple, honeysuckle.

Throughout Olway Spring there appears to be a quantity of overstood coppice of various species but hazel and alder have been noted. If re-coppiced these would provide a valuable resource for bushcraft or forestry use or firewood, as well as benefitting the woodland habitat, and encouraging the environment in which wildflowers and insect life including bees thrive, all beneficial to the overall biodiversity of the wood.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Directions

From the M4 - exit at Junction 24 and take the A449 northwards towards Usk.

Take the exit onto the A472 towards Usk, As you enter Usk, just after the start of the 30mph limit, turn right signposted Gwehelog. After 2 miles you will see our "For Sale" board on the right hand side. Take the next turning right, signposted Llandenny. The turning and parking area for Big Wood is on the right after a few hundred metres.

Coming from north of the wood, from the A40, take the turning from the roundabout at Raglan signposted Usk. Follow this road for a couple of miles or so until you see a sign for Coldharbour. Immediately after this, there is a very sharp hairpin turn to the left, which is very difficult to take. It may be easier to take the right turn directly opposite and then, taking great care for traffic coming from both directions, traverse the road and continue onto the minor road until you come to the entrance to Big Wood very shortly on your right.

Please park at the gate taking care not to block access and continue on foot through the wood, taking the left fork when the track splits and continue until you reach Olway Spring at the end of the track, on the left.
