Rhooks Wood is part of a larger woodland called Allt y Brain, and is situated at the end of a track. The woodland is easily accessible via a four wheel drive track that has recently been improved, and will continue to get better over the next few months. The track spans the length of Allt y Brain, and allows access to the eastern boundary into Rhooks Wood. There is a foot path that follows this boundary and joins you to the upper track in a U-shaped curve.
Situated in a valley, Rhooks Wood contains an interesting assemblage of trees and habitats. Along the lower track are areas of coppiced ash and silver birch, whereas along the upper track are several majestic oaks. You will also find cherry and willow and in Spring the woodland floor is strewn with Bluebells, Wood Anemones and Celendine. The diversity of this woodland ensures that the area is rich with wildlife throughout the year. The western part of the woodland contains plantation style Douglas fir with a smattering of Japanese larch.
This woodland borders a very quiet road and there is a layby nearby which can be used for loading and unloading goods or passengers. There is foot access to the woodland at this point through a handmade ash gate.
There is potential in this woodland to restore it to native broadleaf trees by removing the Douglas fir. Allt y Brain used to form part of the ‘Plas’ Estate, which centred around a large mansion house situated in Llansteffan, a picturesque coastal village a couple of miles away. Llansteffan is a popular tourist destination and has a post office, pub, shop and historic castle. The woodland has a large shared car parking area just past the main gate which is suitable for most cars. The closest village is Llanybri, a short walk from the woodland, which has a village pub. Both Carmarthen and St Clears are easily accessible via the A40 and the M4 is easy to reach from here.

Getting to this woodland from the A40 is very straight forward.
From Carmarthen, follow the A40 west towards St Clears and Haverford West.
After approximately 5 miles take the turning off to the left signposted to Llangynog, Llan-y-bri and the Plas Farm B & B.
Follow this road for 3.8 miles through Llangynog and past an old pub called the Wern Inn.
The main gate to the woodland is set just back from the road on the left hand side. There are several laybys along this road that can be used for temporary parking. Rhooks Wood is at the far end of the main track.
When viewing please try to avoid blocking access to this gate as it is used by other woodland owners.
Alternatively, you can drive round to the other end of the wood, where there is pedestrian only access.
