Many people wonder why you should buy a woodland so we asked some of the members of the Small Woodlands Owner Group why they bought their woods.

Transcript

Why buy a wood? Because it's the most wonderful way of spending your leisure time.

I bought woodlands mainly because we have wood fire at home, so that's easy access to free fuel.

I have a sort of office job and it gives me that bit that otherwise I wouldn't have.

Well, we bought a wood because coming from South Africa on a 3,000 acre farm and living in a two-bed semi, we needed a bit of space around us and we needed to learn about the English countryside.

I've grown up in and around London. I was aware that I didn't know that much about the countryside. So it was an opportunity for me to get out and educate myself about types of trees.

Also for leisure for walking through.

The reason we bought the wood was it was in a nice quiet location and it was somewhere to chill out and escape the rat race of the southeast of England.

I think my husband went along with it because it gave him an excuse to buy a big four-wheel-drive car.

I travel to London every single day and I just need that peace of mind.

Mostly for recreation. Although, I am doing some tree planting as well as land management.

Because you can't sort of camp and have real camp fires anywhere else except your own property.

We also do vintage tractors and that sort of stuff. It gives us actually a chance to use the tractors for what it was intended for.

Mark has always lived in the countryside and I come from a farming background. And also, I've been involved in scouting and guiding through the year. Done a lot of camping and thought it would be lovely to be back into nature.

It's also an opportunity for me to share something with our children and children of our friends so that we can go out and spend some time in the countryside.

We've had it now 18 months. It's been a lot of hard work. Some parts you go down and get that physical work and work yourself out. It's better than any gym.

We are very happy and I have to say it is the best thing we have ever done.

And I just think it's an absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend it.

Hi. I think what you are doing is great, I use a wood about half a mile from my house, with the very kind permition of the land owner who is a retired forester who bought the wood from the forrestry commition, i practice bushcraft and enjoy the wildlife. The only drawback is my wife say's i spend more time there than at home.

woodland costs a packet, only for the rich which normally drive around in landrovers where as the true woodsmen trek it.

If you are in the corner and have no money to get out from that, you will have to receive the home loans. Just because it would aid you definitely. I get college loan every time I need and feel fine because of that.

I dont think I’ll ever be able to leave South Africa for good but on the other hand I find European woodlands breathtaking.
