Hmmm the ground flora looks rather more developed than one would expect from what was an area of pasture 50 years ago, was that dogs mercury and Ramsoms? Is there other evidence besides the aerial photos? Personally I am dubious about the theory that rabbits maintained pasture and their removal created woodland. In my experience farm livestock whether sheep or cattle are the crucial thing, were they grazing this area at that time? Rabbits will make their grazing grounds very short sward but without larger herbivores scrub grows up alongside.
