Barragon Wood, Hampshire - Nearly 5 acres, £65,000

Barragon Wood

The mixed character of Barragon Wood offers much variety to a new owner. On first entering the wood there are mature conifers that offer teasing glimpses of the sprawling open countryside in the distance. The understory here provides dense thicket for woodland mammals where young holly and occasional beech compete for space. A number of pathways have been cut through the undergrowth and continued clearing will promote further growth of more fragile grasses and woodland flowers.

Further into the woodland the greater variety of tree types continues to interest. There is, birch , ash and hazel amongst fir and some fine specimens of old oaks on the western boundary as the woodland meets open fields.

Barragon Wood was originally part of a larger single woodland ownership but in recent months a new community of small woodland owners has developed here and the signs of active engagement in this beautiful environment are now much in evidence. From bird and bat boxes on trees, to freshly prepared log piles and bramble clearing; this activity is encouraging new wildlife and bringing the enjoyment of nature to a new generation of woodland owners.

The wood takes its name from a light corded cotton cloth popular in the eighteenth century and produced in the nearby town of Alton, that provides a handy hub for picking up woodland supplies before venturing into the woods.

This part of rural England has long been valued for its picturesque rolling downland landscape and provided literary inspiration for Jane Austin, who lived in nearby Chawton towards the end of her life. Today this area can be enjoyed from St Swithun's trail walking route that passes close to Barragon Wood as it meanders through the Hampshire countryside along its route from Winchester to Farnham in Surrey.

These particulars and plans were prepared by local manager Daniel Sharp.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
