Cleeve Wood - SOLD, Somerset - About 6 acres, £75,000

Cleeve Wood - SOLD

The area that includes Cleeve Wood is known as Wrington Warren. Until the late 1950s it consisted mainly of arable, rough pasture and small plantations. At this time the better land was planted with Larch, the poorer land in pine. A large proportion was planted with beech with softwood nurse crops. Some of the softwoods were removed after 50 years to reveal a beech woodland, interspersed with birch, ash and ancient yew trees in a delightful mix of established mixed woodland. This now serves as a hub for an enormous variety of wildlife that flourishes in this diverse woodland landscape.

Once within the boundaries of Cleeve Wood, there is much here worthy of further exploration and investigation. A series of banks and hollows punctuates the ground at various points throughout the wood. These are thought to possibly be the remnants of a wartime diversionary defence technique of fire pits to draw enemy bombing attacks away from the civilian population in Bristol. The ground has now recovered and merged back into the intricate floral covering of the forest floor.

The wood takes its name from a nearby village and the dramatic scenery in this part of the Mendip Hills where steep cleeves and wooded gulleys are a defining feature of this stunning landscape.

Whilst Cleeve Wood is enveloped by other privately owned secluded woodland, the wider area is rural in character but with the benefit of easy access to both the small local settlements of Nailsea and Backwell and the extensive facilities offered by the metropolis of Bristol.

A very tiny section located in the south west corner is designated as SSSI.

These particulars were prepared by local manager Daniel Sharp.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
