SOLD: Drey Wood £55,000 Freehold

Description

A place of your own under the cover of towering oak trees and sheltered by holly and hazel coppice is an ideal opportunity for engagement with the natural environment and a place to learn from and enjoy the woodland management efforts of past generations. Drey Wood is a good example of a well considered woodland where oak standards dominate the high canopy and give shelter to the hazel below that in times past was such a versatile resource for making all manner of domestic and agricultural products such as bean poles, hurdles and walking sticks.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Wildlife

The woodland is home to many species. Browsing deer roam freely and the fox and badger are much at home in this environment. It is the domain of one of our most contentious small mammals. The squirrel is both loved and loathed for its cute cartoon image as a cuddly woodland creature but also its fiery independence and seemingly careless attitude towards its own environment that often leads to damage to young trees. Look out for dreys high in the branches where they take refuge in summer and winter to rear their young.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Active forestry management of past generations is much in evidence at Drey Wood. A newly renovated access track brings you to the entrance to the wood where private tracks lead further into the wood. Elsewhere the fading ruts in historic tracks running through the wood and giant stumps are signs of active engagement with the land to crop the hazel coppice and harvest the occasional oak.

Local area and history

The nearby Wye Valley offers a chance to enjoy the scenery from the water and the historic city of Gloucester provides all the facilities necessary for a comfortable camping experience or to begin the journey of managing your own wood.
