Some impressive oak specimens flank the woodland ride leading from the entrance. This cleared area has encouraged a variety of woodland grassed to proliferate where the sunlight can reach the woodland floor. Elsewhere within the wood there is much evidence of former woodland activity from years passed in the over-stood coppice stools and drainage channels running through the wood.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Recently self seeded birch and hazel have thrived and provided screening and protection for wildlife.
The botanical enthusiast will be able to spend many rewarding hours identifying the array of flora that populates the wood. Angelica Sylvestris is the Latin name for the flowering woodland plant from which the wood takes its name. Sylvestris denotes its preference for 'growing in woodland' and historically is believed to have medicinal properties as an anti inflammatory. The stewardship of the wood can further enhance the habitat for wildflowers with some sympathetic management to encourage light to reach the woodland floor.
The mixed woodland habitat both within Flora Wood and the surrounding privately owned woodland has created a hospitable environment for several species of deer and other woodland mammals. Although there have been no confirmed sightings of boar within the wood; this block of woodland provides important cover at the eastern extremity of an important wildlife corridor that runs westward to the Forest of Dean where wild boar can be found.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The Wood entrance is located after a short section of good woodland track, where there is plenty of space to park at the well defined access point. The boundary continues along the track edge and there is therefore plenty of scope to create further entry points into the wood along this track. A rural public footpath runs along the track at the boundary of Flora Wood, making this a great starting point for a new owner to further explore the delightful surrounding countryside.
Local area and history
The fertile plains of the Wye and Severn rivers around Flora Wood are characterised in recent generations by traditional farms and numerous small villages. The village of Birdwood is home to the Kings Head Inn within easy walking distance for refreshments after a rewarding day of woodland activity.
The nearby Wye Valley offers a chance to enjoy the scenery from the water and the historic city of Gloucester provides all the facilities necessary for a comfortable camping experience or to begin the journey of managing your own wood.
Indicative blue boundary markings on posts and trees run through the wood to the north and east. The south and west boundaries run along the edge of the access tracks.
