Fountain Wood - SOLD, Somerset - About 4 ⅓ acres, £55,000

Fountain Wood - SOLD

Fountain Wood is characterised by an imposing make up of mature larch and fir reaching skyward in close formation. The sheltered forest beneath the ranks of trees is a world of its own. Numerous animal tracks pass through the dense undergrowth and young holly and occasional beech stand alongside the network of forestry tracks that date from the creation of this woodland around the middle of last century. Fountain Wood is an ideal hideaway to lose yourself deep within the shelter of the forest and enjoy the adventure of nights around the campfire and retreat from the pace of everyday living.

The carboniferous limestone of this northern tip of the Mendip Hills, has over time broken down to form the distinctive red tinted soil that has successfully supported the grazing livestock of the local farming community for generations. The surrounding area is characterised by exposed limestone 'scarps' or steep faces of rock throughout the numerous coombes and gorges of the Mendip Hills. In particular, neighbouring Goblin Combe is designated at as Site if Special Scientific Interest for the variety of delicate flora and butterflies that thrive unhindered in the area.

The name of this woodland comes from Fountain House, the prestigious post-war building in the City of London with a fountain in the entrance hall where Mathew Wrightson Limited, a Lloyds insurance company, had their offices. Their directors and some of the underwriting names at the time invested in forestry in order to offset the cost against other income and reduce the high taxes they were paying post war and they set up Fountain Forestry which still exists in close proximity to the wood here and is useful source of forestry tools and equipment for the woodland owner.

The nearby town of Nailsea provides a range of services and there is good road access from the larger centre of Bristol to the North, where nearly everything a new woodland owner might need can be found.
