Continue the exploration into the inviting tree cover beneath the generous sheltering canopy of predominantly mature oak trees that are such a classic symbol of English woodland. Further interest and diversity is added by a number of conifers towards the southern boundary.

Once within the wood the ground is well drained and firm underfoot. Elevated level ground at the entrance makes for easy access before giving way to a gentle slope affording enticing views through the trees. Further into the wood towards the southern boundary the gentle mounds of ancient banks and ditches can be made out running through the wood between clusters of holly and hazel coppice that provide important diversity at various points throughout Warren Wood.

Wildlife

As the cool mornings and bright sunshine of spring turns into the long days and warm rain of summer, a rich variety of wildlife takes shelter from the midday heat beneath the cooling forest canopy. The thick cover of fern, grass and bramble provides an important respite and protection from the foraging across open fields in the twilight hours. The woodland floor is home to numerous small excavations where animals dig for nutritious roots and hidden caches of stored food, or have made burrows, dens dreys or warrens in which to rear their young and take refuge from predators.

In the full bloom of summer it is easy to appreciate the beauty of this natural environment after the joy of anticipation for the spring reawakening when the woodland bursts into colour and life.

Fertile Gloucestershire farmland is an idyllic backdrop for the sheltered woodland but provides easy access to extensive services and supplies available in the cathedral city of Gloucester. The Kings Head in Birdwood is located conveniently close to the wood for well earned refreshment after a day of woodland activity or as an alternative to the camp stove.

From Gloucester and the M5 follow signs for Ross On Wye east on the A40. After approximately 7 miles upon entering the village of Birdwood you will see the Kings Head on your left and after a further one hundred metres there is a left turn at the bottom of the pub car park, where, set back from the road is an access gate into the woods and a Woodlands.co.uk 'For Sale' board. Follow this track to the gated entrance to the woods for a few metres as it passes the chicken houses on the left. This gate is kept locked for security but you can contact Daniel 07780 900192 for the code for the combination padlock. Please make sure this gate is kept secured during and after your visit.

Turn right through the gate and follow the main track for 30 metres then take the right fork. Follow this track through the woods for a further 200 metres until you see the entrance and orange markings for Warren Wood on your left.
