It is an exciting and relatively unusual addition to the English woodland landscape to find thriving Coast Redwoods (sequoia sempervirens) sheltered amongst surrounding private woodland deep in the Hampshire countryside where West Coast meets South Coast. The presence of these woodland giants is a noteworthy feature and although compared to the ancient growth examples of West Coast United States and Canada, they are well short of full maturity but are still of awe inspiring proportions.
Enough light filters through the high canopy to encourage a flush of spring bluebells and woodland grasses in well lit clearings and to support an understorey growth of a number of self seeded trees that have become established in recent decades.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
This woodland continues to enthral as you progress further into the inviting cover of the dense canopy into an area of predominantly beech woodland with some examples of towering fir and chestnut. Areas of thick ground cover provide ideal browsing territory for a healthy population of resident deer.
An area of rhododendron provides natural screening along the eastern boundary and an ancient bank clearly defines the extent of West Coast Wood to the north. A series of winding pathways run through the wood to provide access throughout and this could be further improved or maintained as the preserve of the animal kingdom.
Access, tracks and footpaths
A well constructed woodland track runs directly to the entrance to West Coast Wood and continues along the western boundary, where there are further access points into the wood if required.
There is little here to disturb the peace as the woodland is located well away from roads and there is a remarkable absence of the intrusions of modern life. There are no public footpaths in the immediate area, and the woodland is amongst a thriving community of other small woodland owners.
Local area and history
This is a quiet area of the country with only scattered farms and occasional small villages in the immediate proximity. The South Coast and access to the M27 and M3 is however an easy drive away, of approximately 15 minutes, where extensive resources for the small woodland owner are available.
Boundaries are indicated by orange coloured marks on posts and tree running through the wood to the east and south and along the edge of the access track to the west. There is an ancient woodland bank running along the boundary to the north.

Leave the M27 at junction 7 and take the first exit from the roundabout into Charles Watts Way and then left at the next roundabout into Tolbar Way. Follow the road straight over a series of roundabouts through the retail park. Continue for a couple of miles, passing a car sales forecourt and Durley Primary School. The road then bears to the left and after a further 500 metres the turning into the woods is on your left where there is a locked gate.

Follow the woodland track straight on for approx 750 metres until reaching a large clearing with a gate straight ahead for Bells Copse. Turn sharp right just before this gate and then continue along the track for a further 250 metres and you will see the orange coloured boundary markings and name sign for West Coast Wood on your right.
