Arriving at Wintergreen Wood
Mixed tree types
Under the broadleaf canopy
A way between the trees
Leading into the wood
An old shelter /tool store
It is rare to find a manageable sized woodland in this part of England offering the opportunity for family forestry set on level ground with a good access track suitable for a family car. Wintergreen Wood offers a great opportunity and is a woodland of great character where areas of thick cover link to attractive grassy clearings.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
The woodland benefits from a mix of broadleaf and evergreen trees, being well stocked with a variety of mature conifers including fir and larch, along with oak, ash and hazel coppice.
The wintergreen wild flower has declined in England since the 1960s due to woodland clearance
It is found in woods usually further north in England and Scotland. Its small white flowers can be occasionally identified in damp areas of deciduous and mossy coniferous woods on acidic, sandy or loamy soils.
Its common name is misleading - it is neither a wintergreen or a chickweed, but actually a member of the primrose family.
Roe and sika deer are frequent visitors to this enchanting woodland and there is a variety of interesting flora at different times of year including dog's mercury and wood sorrel.
Access, tracks and footpaths
With no public access or public footpaths running through Wintergreen Wood, it is an ideal place to escape. There is a fishing lake and holiday home site on neighbouring land where nature lovers also come to enjoy the tranquillity of the area.
Rights and covenants
Within the dense cover of the woodland an old caravan is located for use as a tool store and shelter for woodland management projects. Woodland owners have development rights to allow such structures in the woods provided that they are reasonably necessary for forestry purposes. There is further information relating to this on the 'owning' section of our website under the topic of 'shelter, sheds and storage'
Local area and history
The Thomas Hardy novel 'The Woodlanders' was reputedly set in this area and the surrounding countryside has much to recommend it to the visitor. There are strong links in evidence to a colourful and grand Medieval history. These include the splendid Abbey at Sherborne, one of England's prettiest towns, and the many historic villages that proliferate in the Cerne Valley where there are any number of ancient hostelries to choose from for refreshment.
Indicative blue boundary markings are on posts and trees running through the wood to the north and south. To the east the access track forms the boundary and to the west there is an an old wooded bank that borders the fishing lake site.
