Freshwater Wood - SOLD, Devon - Nearly 4 acres, £39,000

Freshwater Wood - SOLD

The 'fresh water' in the woodland's name refers to a spring which emerges just to the north of the small stream. The spring-water is collected in a tank and then siphoned down to a tap by the stream. The former owners of these woods claim that they drank the water for over 20 years with no ill-effects.

From the woodland entrance, a broad level band runs approximately east to west right across the woodland, dividing it just about in half. This band consists of a track to the left, with a slight drop down to a streamside area with ash and willow, then a narrow fast-flowing stream. Also by the entrance is a small quarry, a useful source of materials for filling potholes in the tracks, or something more ambitious like the base for a shed or similar.

The area to the left of the track is almost entirely Douglas firs, planted around 30 years ago. Inevitably, some of the trees have prospered more than others and work in this section (should you wish to) would probably first involve thinning out some trees, allowing their neighbours space for further growth.

A footbridge across the stream brings you to a lovely streamside area, fringed with ash, willow and the occasional birch. Turn left and you will find a seat from where you can enjoy the sights and sounds all around you, and just beyond a glorious dense patch of bluebells. Turn right and you soon reach the spring described above.

At first glance this area of Freshwater Wood, north of the stream, looks like just another block of firs. However, appearances can be deceptive and the more you explore this part of the woodland the more you will discover. Dotted among the Douglas fir (planted in 1952) are assorted species including ash, birch, holly and hazel. Standing deadwood has been heavily 'excavated' by woodpeckers whilst at ground level there are are islands of greenery including further shows of bluebells. Make your way up towards the northern boundary and you will discover a border of mostly ash and beech with further bluebells and assorted fungi in evidence particularly in the autumn. Rabbits and badgers make their homes in the banks along the northern and eastern boundaries, whilst the many tracks which criss-cross the woodland - and the obvious crossing points over the stream - indicate the regular presence of both roe and red deer.

There is much to experience and enjoy in Freshwater Wood, with the added bonus that you can toast your good fortune at discovering and owning such a wonderful piece of the Devon countryside with a drink of water from your own spring.
