Lestow Wood - SOLD, Cornwall - About 3 ¼ acres, £39,000

Lestow Wood - SOLD

Located to the north-east of the woodland, Lestow Farm is one of many small to medium sized farms surrounding the woods which, together with further areas of woodland on both sides of the river, contribute to the 'away from it all' feeling the woodland inspires [although, as the directions opposite show, you are really not very far from the towns of Bodmin and Liskeard]. Historically, this part of Cornwall was long regarded as one of the least accessible areas in the county and this situation continued until major road building programmes in the 1950's.

The eastern boundary of Lestow Wood borders open farmland and from here the woodland slopes down to the west, ending at the Warleggan River. Tracks run across the woodland in a roughly north - south direction. At the eastern side there is a narrow track - used mainly by the resident badgers, whilst a little further down a broad, grassy track runs right across the wood. At the southern end of this track there is a sort of 'lay-by', a raised level area which could be the ideal spot for pitching a tent or constructing a woodland store.

Continuing west there is the stoned access track. Near the southern boundary is a parking and turning area and from here a further track leads down to the water's edge and then all the way along the riverbank where, towards the northern end you will find a footbridge onto the island.

The island was formed by the river gradually eroding part of the bank. It is a narrow strip of land with several trees whose root systems help knit the ground together and this is most likely why the island wasn't simply washed away. It is not a large area, but it is a great spot for getting really close to the river and observing its moods and inhabitants. It would also be a fantastic spot for kids - of all ages - to build a den.

Stand on the footbridge and you may well see small trout darting through the water (their larger relatives as well as sea-trout and salmon tend to stick to the main part of the river). These small fish attract the attention of the spectacularly coloured kingfisher as well as the heron - a bird which may look ungainly but is lightening quick when making a grab for its prey. You might also be lucky enough to spot a dipper bobbing about on a boulder in the river.

Beech, oak, ash, hazel and willow are among the species to be found in Lestow Wood; many are mature trees, but there has also been some more recent planting to supplement the older trees.

Bluebells and wood anemones dominate the woodland floor in spring, emerging through the carpet of fallen leaves as the temperatures rise and the daylight hours lengthen.

As already mentioned, there are badger setts within the woodland whilst other four-legged visitors include deer, rabbits and foxes, although of all the creatures, it is the cattle in the fields to the east who seem to show the keenest interest in what's going on within the woods!

So, if you can spare the time to cross the bridge from your island back onto the mainland, there is more than enough to fascinate and inspire you throughout Lestow Wood.

Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Dick White.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
