Skinners Wood - SOLD, Devon - About 5 ¾ acres, £42,000

Skinners Wood - SOLD

Skinners Wood is part of a larger area of woodland, now known as Youldridge Wood. At One time the whole woodland - and much more besides - was part of the Buckland Filleigh estate, which was in the ownership of the Fortescue family for many generations.

One Katherine Skinner married into the family in the 1700s and some believe that this is where the name Skinners Wood is derived from. Others will tell you that an estate worker whose tasks included skinning and preparing the animals killed by the regular hunting parties used to have his shack in this part of the woods.

Whatever the true origins of the name, Skinners Wood today is a fine mix of mature conifers, mixed broadleaves, a colourful ground flora and river frontage along the Musselbrook river.

The woodland lies to either side of a broad, well-constructed shared access track which runs from the main gateway at the southern tip of the woods. To the east of the access track, on ground which slopes gently down from east to west, the majority of the trees are douglas fir which were planted in the 1960's. In among the fir you will find ash, beech, holly and hazel and in the late spring, a colourful display of bluebells and primroses. The trees are well spaced, giving an open and airy feel to the woodland.

Most of Skinners Wood lies to the west of the track, at first sloping quite steeply at the southern end before levelling off into a broad, flat area along the waterside. This part of the woodland is best accessed either from the stoned parking and turning area which is beside the main track, about mid-way along this 'side' of the wood, or along a pathway along the river's edge starting at the northern-most point of the wood.

On the slope, the bulk of the trees are western hemlock, again planted in the early 1960's. The same mix of broadleaved species can be found scattered among the conifers. A recent selective thinning has created pockets of light and space around some of the deciduous trees and already new growth can be seen emerging up in the canopy. A current felling licence is in hand so that further thinning of the conifers could be undertaken if desired.

For those who wish to sit and take in the surroundings, including the creatures which inhabit the woods, the area beside the river is likely to hold the most interest. Small trout dart through the water, hoping to avoid the attentions of the kingfisher sitting overhead and the heron stalking the banks. Red and roe deer browse here and regular crossing points can be seen along the bank-side. Foxes, badgers, rabbits and hares are all never far away.

Skinners Wood is a delightful woodland offering rich rewards to those prepared to take the time to explore it.
