Venton Wood - SOLD, Devon - About 6 acres, £49,000

Venton Wood - SOLD

From the entrance, which is close to the south-east corner of Venton Wood, you can choose to head off in any one of several directions in order to begin your exploration of the woodland.

To your left you will encounter a belt of broadleaved trees all along a narrow stream which forms the southern boundary of the woodland. This is the 'wildest' part of Venton Wood and is in marked contrast to the conifers which cover the majority of the wooded area.

Or you could go straight ahead, along the stoned access track [shared with other woodland owners] which runs up to the western boundary and separates the two contrasting areas of woodland. You can then turn right and follow the boundary line through a corridor in the spruce, right the way up to the northern boundary.

Alternatively you may wish to head off at "two o'clock", along a broad grass track which winds its way through the conifers, meeting the western boundary line just a short distance from its northern end. This open grassy track, with small clearings at various places to either side, is where you will most likely encounter some of the creatures which inhabit Venton Wood [named after a prominent local family who, in earlier centuries owned much of the surrounding area]. Rabbits, foxes and deer [mostly roe, occasionally red and more recently fallow] can all be seen browsing or just sunning themselves along the way.

Or maybe you will prefer to keep to your right, following the wide grass track which runs between the conifers and the western boundary hedge [containing many blackthorn, a great source of sloes], down to the north-west corner and then turning left all the way along the northern hedge-bank where badger activity is easy to spot. Located in the north-west corner is a lovely open grassed area featuring several commanding oak trees and a bench from which to sit and admire them - a great place for pitching your tent. From here you can also look across the neighbouring woodland whose open grassland and lakes attract a lot of wildlife, deer in particular, but also species of birds and bats which are less common in other parts of the woods.

Venton Wood has other areas of privately owned woodland to three sides and open farmland on the remaining side and as such is a very peaceful and undisturbed place to spend time enjoying all the sights and sounds around you.

With so much to find for yourself, the only question is: which way shall I go first?

Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Dick White.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
