Chaldron Wood - SOLD, Cumbria - About 5 ¼ acres, £39,000

Chaldron Wood - SOLD

Chaldron Wood is a peaceful open woodland, right in the heart of the larger wooded area named Rowbank. The predominant tree species is scots pine but many deciduous species have also prospered here to give a rich diversity. Birch, beech, sycamore and the occasional sweet chestnut have all established themselves well. Especially welcome are several young wych elm marking a return to the English landscape. Holly, hawthorn, gorse and rowan mingle with the young succession trees to give an additional valuable understory habitat.

As the season change the woodland floor plants come and go, marking the passage of time in a ceaseless cycle. Bluebells mark late spring, foxglove the summer, whilst the ever present bryophytes and ferns ensure the wood is never bereft of green.

An attentive eye can easily spot the faint yet well used trails crossing the landscape. Roe deer and badgers are the creators of these woodland highways as they forage through from dusk til dawn.

Not to be forgotten are the bird species, all occupying their own specific niche; woodcock in the leaf litter, tits and finches the understory, woodpecker the standing deadwood and keeping a watchful eye overall, that master of the airwaves the buzzard.

Chaldron Wood provides a home for the threatened red squirrel, an iconic species. A conservation project operates locally to help ensure its survival here. With patience and a little luck, this endearing and agile creature can be seen moving high in the canopy or scurrying through the undergrowth.

Bisecting the corner of the greater Rowbank Wood, a public footpath follows the route of "The Dandy" a former railway line linking Alston and Brampton. The line was constructed by Lord Carlisle to bring stone and coal from the hills down in to Brampton. A "chaldron", from which the wood takes its name, was the name given to the wagons carrying these materials; it is also a measure of volume usually applied to coal. Now parts of the line can be walked, giving access to the fells and the surrounding countryside.

Brampton Station is within easy walking distance of Chaldron Wood, making this the perfect woodland to access by train. The market town of Brampton is also close by and is well served by plenty of B+Bs and pubs. In the wider area is the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Geltsdale RSPB reserve, home to a large variety of both native and migrant species.

Well served by a good, shared, sandy access track, the wood also has the convenience a small hard standing for turning vehicles or stacking timber prior to collection. Whether for domestic firewood or more constructive use, Chaldron Wood can provide an ample supply of timber. The felling of some of the coniferous trees would help the regeneration of the native broadleaves or indeed they could be re-introduced by planting, further enhancing the diversity of this already established ancient woodland (PAWS).

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
