Dunrigg Wood - SOLD, Cumbria - Over 4 ¾ acres, £35,000

Dunrigg Wood - SOLD

Dunrigg Wood is particularly unusual as it is very easily negotiated on foot. It is predominantly level throughout, although a short south facing bank gives welcome open views over the local farm land and occasional glimpses of the nearby Cumbrian Fells.

Although the dominant tree species in the wood is Scots pine, years of natural regeneration has introduced many native broadleaves: sycamore, birch, beech and wych elm have all become well established. Holly and hawthorn occupy the understory, frequently mantled with a tangle of honeysuckle, fragrant when in bloom. The woodland floor is a rich carpet of mosses, sorrel and fern, giving a verdant hue even when the broadleaf branches are bare. With its rich carpet of fallen leaves supporting a teeming invertebrate population, a correspondingly diverse population of animals and birds are comfortably ensconced.

Shrews and voles, scurry below, happily sharing the space with their larger badger cousins and roe deer. Tracks and signs abound, and with a modicum of patience and an ounce of stealth, a magical encounter with our native wildlife is bound to occur. A red squirrel conservation group operates in the whole wood, helping to ensure that this agile and charming creature retains its place in the wood.

As one might expect, the birdlife of Dunrigg is equally extensive. Buzzards regularly nest in the pine trees while sparrow hawks jink through the tree trunks, always on the alert for the unwary prey. Jays squawk from the canopy, looking down as woodpeckers hammer at rotten stumps. Elusive woodcock, perfectly camouflaged against the vegetation, only reveal their presence as they burst from cover and make their escape.

Whether your interest is in conservation, wildlife spotting or the great outdoors, Dunrigg wood is the perfect place to invest in our national woodland heritage, engage in woodland management and to simply relax and enjoy the environment.

Well served by a good, shared, sandy access track, the wood also has the convenience a small hard standing for turning vehicles or stacking timber prior to collection. Whether for domestic firewood or more constructive use, Dunrigg Wood can provide an ample supply of timber. The felling of some of the coniferous trees would help the regeneration of the native broadleaves or indeed they could be re-introduced by planting, further enhancing the diversity of this already established ancient woodland (PAWS).

Bisecting the corner of greater Rowbank Wood, a public footpath follows the route of "The Dandy" a former railway line linking Alston and Brampton. The line was constructed by Lord Carlisle to bring stone and coal from the hills down in to Brampton. Possibly the most famous railway engine ever, Stephensons' Rocket, once retired from service, was brought here to serve out its days hauling coal trains. Now parts of the line can be walked, giving access to the fells and the surrounding countryside.

Brampton Station is within easy walking distance of Dunrigg Wood, making this the perfect woodland to access by train. The market town of Brampton is also close by and is well served by plenty of B+Bs and pubs. In the wider area is the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Geltsdale RSPB reserve, home to a large variety of both native and migrant species.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
