Fines Wood - SOLD, Cumbria - Just over 4 ¼ acres, £45,000

Fines Wood - SOLD

A woodland of very distinct areas, each with a unique ecosystem; Fines wood is well worth viewing on the ground. After a short climb up a gentle bank the wood opens up with distinct level ledges. A former conifer plantation that was clear felled some years ago, the wood has benefited from natural succession. Several majestic larch remain but as the canopy is open, the result is a light and airy feel with holly, birch and alder occupying the understory. Even an occasional oak is present, with honeysuckle, fern and gorse adding to the variety.

The lower areas have a small but free flowing stream crossing them. This supports a variety of mosses and moisture loving plants along its banks. Here can be found stands of alder, once an important coppice crop in the area.

This floral variety supports a corresponding abundance of wildlife. Tits and finches forage amongst the undergrowth whilst buzzards keep a watchful eye from above. On a warm sunny day reptiles such as adders and lizards can be chanced upon building up their body heat on the rocks. As the various well worn tracks indicate, roe deer roam freely throughout the wood. Finding a quiet spot to sit and watch will be well rewarded as the native inhabitants go about their daily lives. Something different on every occaision.

Fines wood is excellent landscape in which to pursue interests such as conservation and nature watching , with overnight camping along the ridge a virtual must.

Now part of the National Park the area was once teeming with industry. The nearby Dolly blue factory, now a popular hotel, and the Stott Park bobbin mill are a mere fraction of what once was. The coppiced woodland of south Lakeland was a valuable resource, supplying the Lancashire mills with numerous resources.

Nearby Newby Bridge, once a part of Lancashire, is a small village adjoining the River Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Its name is derived from the five-arched stone bridge built across the river in 1651. It caters mainly for the passing tourist trade, and has a railway station on the preserved Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Newby Bridge is a convenient base to explore the Furness peninsula and southern Lakeland areas.

Access: via Hazelrigg Lane through Canny Hill from the A590(T). There is a communal hard standing area for parking just at the shared entrance and another area for parking inside the ridestop at the entrance to Hawhill Wood.

The Area: With Lakeland fells to the north and Morecambe Bay to the south, Ellerbank Wood is perfectly located in the Lake District National Park, world famous for its beauty and ruggedness. There are plenty of places to stay including a number of B+Bs in the local area.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
