Floutern Wood - SOLD, Cumbria - Over 6 ½ acres, £59,000

Floutern Wood - SOLD

Located on the very fringe of the Lake District National Park, Floutern Wood has much to offer the woodland owner. Sloping down from surrounding pasture, the wood levels out before bounding the beautiful River Ehen. A smaller water course, Horse Gill, gives safe access to water for youngsters, whereas the much larger river, which has SSSI status, boasts excellent fishing. Both sea trout and salmon are often caught in season; local advice can be sought at the nearby fishing club. Throughout the wood the sound of rushing water can be heard from both of the watercourses running within.

Many an animal track criss-crosses the undergrowth and it takes a keen eye to spot the differences. Roe and red deer leave their sharp hoof prints whilst the resident badger has a softer footfall and its trail sneaks under and through, where the larger mammals baulk. Beneath overhanging boughs along the river bank there is evidence of otter entry points.

A profusion of tree species inhabit the wood; some very large oak, ash and sycamore grace the slopes. The more level areas have been populated by birch, holly, alder and hazel. Sorrel, hard fern and hart's tongue poke through a variety of mosses. Up above in the tree growth, there is a tremendous variety of small birds including finches, tits and other woodland birds and they share the canopy with the once common red squirrel.

Although quite sizeable, Floutern wood is the perfect platform for woodland management, conservation effort, occasional recreational camping and above all enjoying this peaceful corner of Cumbria.

Following the track from the wood entrance, the visitor will notice the far reaching views out to the fells of the western Lake District and continuing on you will find a stout bench. At this point in the wood, the foot print of a ruined house provides evidence of the woodlands distant, industrial past. Where the river cuts in to the bank, small pieces of coal give a clue to purpose of the many, now disused, railway tracks and buildings in the area. One of these in particular, has been made into a cycle way featuring steel sculptures designed by local children.

The area's industrial past was recorded by the well known artist L S Lowry, who was a frequent visitor to Cleator Moor. A blue plaque on the library commemorates his former presence.

Locally: With the charming village of Ennerdale bridge less than four miles away, this is a quiet and little-visited corner of the Lake district. Nearby Ennerdale water is rated as Cumbria's most secluded lake. However there are plenty of B&Bs and pubs serving the local community and the St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay coast to coast path, which passes to the north of the wood.

Sporting rights: These are owned and included with the land along with the fishing rights.

Access: A locked gateway leads off a quiet country lane along a solid track, where there is a full right of way (suitable for most cars) to the woodland entrance, leading to internal paths, clearings and a timber stacking area and vehicle turning point.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
