Within a mile of Lake Windermere with the fells close by, a wildlife-rich woodland.

Situated in a beautiful, slightly elevated, position, Harebridge Wood is less than a mile from the southern tip of Lake Windermere. Views out of the wood look towards the ridge of Newton Fell.

The wood was a plantation, first planted in the 1960s and managed for timber: a number of years ago it was thinned out leaving some widely spaced specimen larch trees and a wide selection of other species which provides an ideal opportunity to plant new trees. Seedlings from the larger trees around the edge of the wood are starting to regenerate and these could be nurtured and encouraged. These trees include cherry, hawthorn, birch, alder, rowan, willow and sycamore. Also present in the wood are a diverse selection of mosses, lichens and ferns as well as wild raspberries and blackberries. There are a few foxgloves in the early summer and where the bracken thins out woodland plant species like bedstraw and wood sorrel can be found.

The sharp eyed observer will be able to watch woodpeckers of both the greater spotted and green variety as well as wrens and a variety of small birds that make their home in the wood or come to feed on the abundant insect life. You can hear the mew of buzzards and the cronk of ravens overhead. There are signs of deer, both roe and red all around.

A short walk from the parking area there is a level area with a bench underneath some sycamore trees. The wood is enclosed with traditional stone walls and is subject to the CROW Act 2000, meaning there is public access on foot only. A number of other stone walls run through the wood hinting at its former life as open fell where sheep were gathered.

Access: via Hazelrigg Lane through Canny Hill from the A590(T). There is a communal hard standing area for parking just at the shared entrance. Harebridge Wood is accessed from the ride stop entrance with parking and a path that leads to a small levelled area.

The Area: With Lakeland fells to the north and Morecambe Bay to the south, Harebridge Wood is perfectly located in the Lake District National Park, world famous for its beauty and ruggedness. There are plenty of places to stay including a number of B+Bs in the local area.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Our Directions:

  • Exit the M6 at Junction 36 and proceed onto the A590(T) signed to Barrow.
  • Proceed for approximately 3 miles where you exit to the left and at the roundabout continue on the A590 signed for A590 Barrow and Milnthorpe.
  • Continue on the A590 for 11 miles
  • Take the second left after the end of the new dual carriageway signed to Canny Hill.
  • Follow this road until the T Junction is reached and turn sharp left.
  • The main entrance gate is 100 metres further along the road on the right by the 'for sale" sign.
  • Park close to the entrance gate, please try not to block access to the wood.
  • Walk into the car park beyond the gate, and you will notice the entrance to Harebridge Wood is on the left. The entrance is clearly marked with a ride stop, name sign and a Woodlands for sale sign.
