Yemhow Wood - SOLD, Lake District - About 2⅓ acres, £32,500

Yemhow Wood - SOLD

Glimpses of the tops of Whin Rigg through the trees are a constant reminder of the spectacular scenery which surrounds Yemhow Wood. From a clearing in the wood, looking through the trees you see the Wastwater Screes rising dramatically from the depths of the lake.

Around 30 years ago Yemhow Wood was planted with larch. Natural woodland regeneration has played its part and birch now forms most of the maturing canopy with the occasional rowan and oak. A number of sweet chestnut trees were felled around the time the larch was planted. The regrowth from the stumps has created some elegant multi-stemmed trees, that along with a number of large beech trees, create character and diversity in the wood.

The Victorian influence on the woodland can be seen in the understory of rhododendron. A number of clearings and paths have recently been created and these are private areas within the wood that could be used for camping or as a base for exploring the area.

Sitting quietly, one becomes aware of the abundance of bird life. Great tits and blackcaps can be heard throughout the woodland. Disturbing the leaf layer quickly brings the presence of a foraging robin, eager to see what insects have been uncovered. By night tawny owls hunt through the wood and a sparrowhawk is often seen, displaying incredible agility as it hunts through canopy.

The woodland is a refuge for the endangered red squirrel and conservation effort is already active in the woods to ensure its survival. Take a look at this short film shot in a neighbouring wood; Squirrel in Snighow.

Where light has reached the woodland floor, a greater diversity of plant life exists: foxgloves, raspberry and wood avens can all be found in the eastern-most area of the wood.

A few minutes walk brings you to Wastwater. From here you can take in scenes that were voted as the best view in Britain by ITV viewers. This is an excellent opportunity to own your wood in the heart of the national treasure which is the Lake District.

Down by the lakeshore is Wasdale Hall that also can be seen from Yemhow Wood. The hall was built in 1829 and was the home (yem or yam in Cumbrian dialect) of the Musgrave family until it was given to the National Trust and set up as a youth hostel. There are a number of other places to stay or eat locally, including the pub in Nether Wasdale and campsites and the hotel in Wasdale Head.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
