Colliers Wood is set in an attractive valley in the heart of rural mid-Devon. The woodland has good access from the north east suitable for most vehicles and has a secondary access point more suited to 4x4 use from the southern edge (see plan 3 below)
Dominated by large swathes of pretty oak woodland, the southern section has many plateaus which make an idea camping area or base for green woodworking.
Whilst at the north of Colliers Wood there is a level area next to the Iron Mill stream. This area is perfect for observing water based birds such as the Kingfisher and the Dipper. A rustic bench located here provides the perfect place to sit whilst visiting to take in this serene woodland atmosphere.
From here you can walk up the track that runs along the eastern boundary of Colliers Wood. Although steep at first, the track levels out to provide good access to the upper parts of this semi-natural Ancient woodland. There are deer tracks through the trees here, bilberries upon the ground floor and a charming natural stream that flows down the southern western edge of Colliers Wood.
Colliers Wood was named after Colliers who were once widespread throughout Devon and was someone who made and sold charcoal, the name being derived from the Old English 'Col' meaning coal. There are still charcoal makers in the area today who are carrying on the process of charcoal making that is known to have been in use since the Bronze Age.
This predominantly oak woodland provides a habitat rich in biodiversity, oak supports more life forms than any other of our native trees. The nooks and crannies of ancient oaks are perfect habitats for nesting birds, whilst bats take advantage of old woodpecker holes for roosting. Further down the food chain numerous insects are a perfect food supply for many woodland birds.
The woodland setting is so peaceful and quiet yet its convenient location means it is only a 5 minute drive from the main link road of North Devon, the A361. Access to the wood is via a stoned forestry track and there is a parking area at the entrance of Colliers Wood.
Not far away is the rugged and stunning north Devon coast with its popular surfing beaches of Croyde or Woolacombe, and Westward Ho! is within a 45 minute drive. Also Exmoor National Park offers fantastic walking and cycling opportunities and is only about 10 miles from the woodland. The market town of Tiverton is within a short drive and has many facilities including shops and a leisure centre with a swimming pool.

The southern and eastern boundaries follow the edge of a shared forestry path.
The western boundary is indicated by a line of fence posts.
The northern boundary is along the stream. As the plans indicate, some of the stream is within the woodland boundary.

- From the M5 junction 27 take the A361 past Tiverton towards Barnstaple.
- Around 6 miles from Tiverton take a right turn signed Bellbrook and Spurway.
- Continue along this road straight across Broadmead Cross for about a mile and look out for a gate on your left with a 'woodlands for sale' sign on it.
- Continue past this gateway and continue down the hill for about another mile until you reach the foot of the hill where you will see a gateway with a 'woodlands for sale' sign on and a large splay where you can park to view the woodland.
- Park outside the gate leaving the access clear.
- Climb carefully over the gate. A key will be provided for the purchaser for vehicular access.
- Head up the stoned access track until the brow of the hill and you will see Colliers Wood on either side of the track indicated by a 'Colliers Wood' name sign.
- There is a track down to the northern section of the woodland which runs partly along the Iron Mill stream.
- You can also follow the forestry track that turns left up along the eastern boundary of Colliers Wood and takes you all the way along this boundary and the southern boundary of the woodland. Please note there is also a secondary vehicular access point to the southern side of Colliers Wood as indicated on plan 3.
