Riddle Wood - SOLD

Riddle Wood is nestled on a peaceful valley within a few miles of Dartmoor in this beautiful part of rural Devon. The location is tranquil yet it is conveniently located within a 5 minute drive of the A30.

Mature conifer trees dominate the southern entrance of Riddle Wood with many smaller shrubs providing ground cover. The conifer trees, which include Douglas fir, can provide timber suitable for projects for the woodland owner. From the woodland entrance a path meanders through towering trees, be sure to continue all the way down this path and explore all the contrasting habitats.

As you proceed down the path to the northern section of the wood the conifer trees give way to an area of broadleaved trees dominated by birches. Birch has a high conservation value for a number of reasons: it gives an open canopy allowing light onto the ground and helping flowering plants to grow whilst the small leaves give some shade allowing other flora species such as mosses to establish. In turn the rich mixtures of flora provide an ideal habitat for birds to feed. Butterflies such as the Painted Lady and the Silver Wash Fritillary feed on the bramble and other plants. Birch is a resilient tree that can survive extreme weathers and windy conditions. If you are lucky you may see red deer or roe deer that often shelter in this part of the woodland. A fun family project that you could do with birch is the traditional skill of besom making.

Within the area of birches is a useful wooden forestry shelter has been built, ideal for storage or taking shelter on rainy days.

Following the path to the northern boundary will take you to an attractive stream where a picnic bench is located, please do take a while to sit and take and enjoy the sounds of flowing water and birdsong. Near to the stream are many hazel trees, hazel nuts for provide a good source of food for both the wood mouse and woodland owners alike! There is also a secondary access to this area is from a track from the eastern boundary from the bridleway.

Riddle Wood has a shared parking area just before the entrance gate and also space at the entrance to the woodland itself.

Riddle Wood is situated near the mid-Devon village of Cheriton Bishop, meaning 'church town' in Anglo-Saxon. The name Riddle Wood is a reference to the rich historical roots with the Anglo-Saxon period and the Exeter Book of Anglo-Saxon literature. This is a collection of poetry and writings referred to as ‘riddles’.

The village church, based on a Norman style is well worth visiting. At the edge of the village is Woodleigh Coach House, which was used as a resting place for travellers on the route between London and Penzance. It used to have a hayloft and stables for the horses of the stagecoaches. During the Second World War the building was used to house children. Indeed it was along the road running through the village that the news of Nelson's victory and his death at the Battle of Trafalgar was carried from Falmouth to the Admiralty based in London.

There is a pub, a shop, a post office and a cafe within the village, along with a primary school.

The village of Tedburn St. Mary is a few miles away and has a useful engineering shop selling fence posts, chainsaws and parts and many other items useful for the woodland owner.

Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager Stuart Brooking.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
