Soussons Wood, Devon - Over 2 acres, £25,000

Soussons Wood

Soussons Wood is a pleasant open woodland that has historically been professionally managed, leaving well spaced Douglas fir trees with a clear forestry floor, perfect for enjoying family camping and exploring.

The trees in the northern and western edges of the woodland are mixed with mature broadleaved trees such as sweet chestnut. A fine example of one of the more mature sweet chestnut trees (‎Castanea sativa) can be seen near the entrance.

Features include an old tree-lined wood bank running parallel to the northern boundary and a good stoned forestry track leading all the way to Soussons Wood. Located in the heart of the woodland is a bench, a perfect place to sit and relax and listen to the varied sounds that such a habitat brings – bird songs, the breeze shaking the leaves and often nothing but tranquillity.

Birds seen here include long tailed tits, blue tits, woodpeckers and the elusive goldcrest to name a few examples. With the onset of night the mood of the woodland changes and the air is filled with the sound of owls as they "hoot t hoot"

Soussons Wood is perfectly placed for small scale practical forestry, perhaps utilising some of the trees for forestry structures using a mobile sawmill. Clearing small areas of the Douglas fir trees subject to obtaining a felling license from the Forestry Commission would allow the purchaser room to enrich the variety of trees found with some new planting. Alternatively sit back and relax and do nothing but enjoy your surroundings.

Soussons Wood is easily found from the main A38 Devon Expressway via a country lane and a stoned forest track so ideal for even a brief visit when in the vicinity. An added bonus is the access to the footpaths of Dartmoor by walking down the main track in the larger woodland surrounding Soussons Wood. A ten minute walk through the trees down to the northern end of the woodland allows you to join a bridleway that takes you within the parish of Ilsington at the eastern fringe of Dartmoor National Park.

Here there are numerous walks and cycle rides to enjoy the breathtaking views. There are a couple of pubs within an hour’s walk such as the The Welcome Stranger and The Carpenters Arms. You can even explore the National park to find Sousson's stone circle, a local Bronze age relic that the woodland is named after. The name is said to have derived fromthe word 'Soueston' and could have meant'at the seven stones', referring to the stone circle.

As well as the magnificent surroundings of Dartmoor, there are numerous other interesting places near to the woodland, from the ancient stannary town of Ashburton to the market town of Bovey Tracey as well as the wonders of the National Park of Dartmoor. Also nearby is coastal Torbay with numerous beaches and activities.
