Coed Nantmor (Nantmor Wood) - SOLD, Gwynedd - 6⅓ acres, £49,000

Coed Nantmor (Nantmor Wood) - SOLD

Coed Nantmor is part of a larger woodland known as Moelydd Bach, a broadleaf woodland located between Porthmadog and Beddgelert. The whole woodland is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), due to a variety of features. In particular, it supports lower plants of interest such as different mosses, liverworts and lichens, along with it being a predominantly western sessile oak woodland of a type known as “Atlantic Oak” woodland. These woods, nicknamed “temperate rainforest” are only found on the Atlantic coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. This woodland is part of a series of woods in the Festiniog area, together known as Merionydd Oakwoods, and designated as a Special Area for Conservation (SAC). As well as the oaks, mosses and lichens, this wood is a favoured habitat for lesser horseshoe bats, silver studded blue butterflies and small red damselfly. These varied species all enhance the biodiversity of the woodland.

The entrance to this woodland is fitted with a wooden gate which opens to a large parking or timber stacking area. The entrance is surrounded by very mature oak trees combined with silver birch and holly trees. Along the outskirts of the entrance are a number of rocky outcrops which are covered in the various mosses which inhabit the woodland. Moelydd Bach has recently had the main track, which runs through the middle of the wood, upgraded. The track consists of locally sourced stone, with concrete strips on the steeper sections, to provide access through the woodland.

Coed Nantmor is at the far end of the stone track, where there is a turning area and ride stop. To the right of the ride stop is a path that takes you up the slope, close to the boundary with the neighbouring woodland to your right, to a level shelf terrace on your left where you will find a bench to admire the valley view and ancient trees around you. Past the bench and above you is a path that winds up further and round to meet an old stone wall and ancient trees where you catch glimpses of the valley beyond. From there the track leads you through the woodland and tall trees and gently up to a fern filled area that ends in a clearing where you can see wonderful views of the National Park beyond. Next to the clearing is a rocky outcrop which you could climb to get an even better view over the woodland to give you a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside. Up here, you are 500m from the nearest road or even footpath, and it feels beautifully quiet and secluded. The woodland at height where the light penetrates is well covered in bracken, but heather covers the rocky area with some gorse. The woodland has oak, holly, hazel, mountain ash, ash, and silver birch with small amounts of Bilberry. The northern boundary is a dry stone wall. The eastern boundary is a post and wire fence, almost buried in the bracken. Other boundaries separate Coed Nantmor from neighbouring woodland.

Further information about the SSSI is available, by searching the NRW site for Coedydd Nanmor. We have found Natural Resources Wales to be very helpful about the best way to care for the woodland, and very supportive of everything that we have wanted to do there.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
