Coed Yr Arddu - SOLD, Gwynedd - 7½ acres, £55,000

Coed Yr Arddu - SOLD

Coed Yr Arddu is part of a larger woodland known as Moelydd Bach, a broadleaf woodland located between Porthmadog and Beddgelert. The whole woodland is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), due to a variety of features. In particular, it supports lower plants of interest such as different mosses, liverworts and lichens, along with it being a predominantly western sessile oak woodland of a type known as “Atlantic Oak” woodland. These woods, nicknamed “temperate rainforest” are only found on the Atlantic coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. This woodland is part of a series of woods in the Festiniog area, together known as Merionydd Oakwoods, and designated as a Special Area for Conservation (SAC). As well as the oaks, mosses and lichens, this wood is a favoured habitat for lesser horseshoe bats, silver studded blue butterflies and small red damselfly. These varied species all enhance the biodiversity of the woodland.

The entrance to this woodland is fitted with a wooden gate which opens to a large parking or timber stacking area. The entrance is surrounded by very mature oak trees combined with silver birch and holly trees. Along the outskirts of the entrance are a number of rocky outcrops which are covered in the various mosses which inhabit the woodland. Moelydd Bach has recently had the main track, which runs through the middle of the wood, upgraded. The track consists of locally sourced stone, with concrete strips on the steeper sections, to provide access through the woodland. To the left of the track is a small stream which is accompanied by ferns on both sides.

Coed Yr Arddu is a wood of two quite distinct parts. The main area is the wooded slopes of the Dylif valley, where you will find silver birch, holly, oak, ash, mountain ash, and hazel with bilberry ground cover on rocky outcrops with thick coverings of moss. At the bottom of the valley, where the Afon Dylif enters the wood through a gap in the dry stone wall that forms the northern boundary, the land changes to more of a wetland habitat with tussocky grass and bracken. The river runs through Coed yr Arddu for a while, then forms the boundary for a short distance, until the wood ends where the river meets and runs alongside the dry stone wall.

A great woodland project would be building a bridge across the river to reach the small area next to the wall.

A path has been cut into the wood, from the end of the track, leading to a clearing with a bench, and then continuing at the base of the steeper rocky slope near the boundary of the wood, all the way to another clearing, and then to the dry stone wall. Downhill from the second clearing is the best way down to the river, where it comes through the wall.

Further information about the SSSI is available, by searching the NRW site for Coedydd Nanmor. We have found Natural Resources Wales to be very helpful about the best way to care for the woodland, and very supportive of everything that we have wanted to do there.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
