Moelydd Bach - SOLD, Gwynedd - Over 55 acres, £350,000

Moelydd Bach - SOLD

Moelydd Bach is a large broadleaf woodland located between Porthmadog and Beddgelert. It is over 55 acres in size and is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

This woodland was designated as a SSSI due to a variety of features. In particular, it supports lower plants of interest such as different mosses, liverworts and lichens, along with it being a predominantly western sessile oak woodland of a type known as “Atlantic Oak” woodland. These woods, nicknamed “temperate rainforest” are only found on the Atlantic coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. This woodland is part of a series of woods in the Festiniog area, together known as Merionydd Oakwoods, and designated as a Special Area for Conservation (SAC). As well as the oaks, mosses and lichens, this wood is a favoured habitat for lesser horseshoe bats, silver studded blue butterflies and small red damselfly. These varied species all enhance the biodiversity of the woodland.

The entrance to this woodland is fitted with a wooden gate which opens to a large parking or timber stacking area. The entrance is surrounded by very mature oak trees combined with silver birch and holly trees. Along the outskirts of the entrance are a number of rocky outcrops which are covered in the various mosses which inhabit the woodland. Moelydd Bach has recently had the main track, which runs through the middle of the wood, upgraded. The track consists of locally sourced stone, with concrete strips on the steeper sections, to provide access through the woodland. To the left of the track is a small stream which is accompanied by ferns on both sides.

The topography of this woodland is also fascinating; throughout the woodland there are many different ridges and valleys, with flat areas on top of rocks, which are secluded and ideal for camping and other woodland activities. It would be easy to spend a day exploring the woods and still not have seen all the features. Apart from the short section of boundary that is the River Dylif, the wood is bounded on all sides by dry stone walls or fences, so it is always possible to find your way back. Some of the flatter area near the river is a grassy wetland, but most of the rest of the wood is easy to walk through.

Hazel can be found in the woodland, and there are several areas where the woodland floor is carpeted with thousands of young oak saplings. Bilberry can also be found within the woodland.

Towards the northern boundary, there is a large open clearing. This space has extensive potential to be planted with more trees to further enhance the biodiversity. Alternatively, this section could be converted into a meadow, which could support various species of wild flowers, or just left untouched. This part of the woodland is also the highest point, providing views of the surrounding area. The Snowdonia mountain range can be seen from this point, and in the opposite direction the sea near Porthmadog. This area is predominantly inhabited by heather, giving an uninterrupted view in both directions.

Further information about the SSSI is available, by searching the NRW site for Coedydd Nanmor. We have found Natural Resources Wales to be very helpful about the best way to care for the woodland, and very supportive of everything that we have wanted to do there.

Please note: this wood is also available as a series of smaller woods, starting with Coed Yr Arddu

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
