Bingham Wood - SOLD, Nottinghamshire - Nearly 4 ¾ acres, £55,000

Bingham Wood - SOLD

Bingham Wood is reached by a good stone track which borders its southern boundary and a grassy ride also runs along the western edge too.

Visitors will note that there is a very lovely mixture of mature oak and Scots pine trees, growing tall and straight, there is some valuable and useful timber amongst this. Beneath, at the shrub layer and adding more diversity, there’s a good scattering of hawthorn, blackthorn and goat willow. On the woodland floor, mosses, ferns and grasses are growing amid patches of blackberry and wild rose.

The attractive multi-layered canopy, a mix of evergreen cover and deciduous trees, provides a fantastic habitat for an array of woodland birds and animals; the low foliage provides good cover for ground-dwelling woodcock, whilst many other birds such as tits, finches and goldcrests can be spotted through the treetops. Goat willow (pussy willow) blossoms early in spring providing a vital food source for bumblebees coming out of hibernation. As to be expected of a forest of this size, other wildlife abounds too, with deer being especially common including muntjac and roe – ideal if you were interested in capturing these secretive creatures on a trail-cam or camera trap.

During spring and early summer, the wood is alive with a crescendo of birdsong. Taking a moment to listen from the resting place of the rustic bench, a short distance from the ride-stop, the trained ear may pick out the calls of robins, blackbirds, great tits, blue tits, tree creepers, jays, chiff-chaffs, to name but a few and even the buzzard's mew as they soar overhead.

On the opposite side of the grass ride, outside Bingham Wood, a compartment of woodland has been felled in recent years and is regenerating. Because this area is younger and lower growing, a good deal of sunlight filters into Bingham Wood creating a pleasant light, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

Bingham, from which the wood takes its name, is a market town close to Cotgrave Forest, in Rushcliffe. The place name Bingham is thought to contain the Old English personal name, Bynna, + ingahām of the influential Nottinghamshire family ‘the Binghams’. In November 2013 it was named the best town in England and Wales to raise a family. Lots of its houses are new, but there are many old buildings in the centre of the village, such as the parish Church of St. Mary, a Grade I listed medieval building.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
