Brinkworth Wood - SOLD, East Yorkshire - Over 3 ¾ acres, £45,000

Brinkworth Wood - SOLD

Brinkworth Wood is approached by a good stone track which runs along its eastern boundary. Towards the north near a group of young willows, a track leads in, with space to stack timber awaiting collection or turn a vehicle.

About this area is younger woodland and it is filled with sunlight; this section was cut a few years ago with oak and cherry trees being planted in protective tubes, for succession. Along with coarse grasses, coppiced birch and willow, this contributes to the feeling of heathland and much of the wildlife that you would associate with heath, can be found here. It’s likely you might put up woodcocks as they choose to nest in amongst brambles and bracken in slightly more open areas.

The young birch, which thrives in the sunlight, has been harvested to make horse jumps: this helps the planted trees establish and is also great for ecology – the birch will keep growing back each time its cut until eventually, a new canopy, of selected trees, closes over. Of course, this young woodland could easily be shaped to suit the future priorities of the new woodland owner.

A cleared route runs from the end of the track through the young trees, reaching a bench near the southern boundary of the wood. The seat is situated in a sunny sheltered spot at the edge of a stand of much larger trees. These maturing trees flank the edges of a drainage feature (part of the wood boundary). This is an attractive dell of older birch, sycamore, some oaks and pine, with evergreen rhododendron and holly as the understorey. From here, there are pleasant views back across the younger parts of the wood and through to bigger trees in the wider woodland.

Take a moment here to reflect on the tranquillity of the setting with the occasional mew of buzzards overhead, sometimes the hoot of a tawny owl and the constant song of the smaller woodland birds such as chiff-chaffs, great tits and wrens.

A grassy track, forms the western boundary of Brinkworth Wood and a few large oak trees are dotted along this edge.

The wood takes its name from Brinkworth Hall, formerly known as Edmond's farm and the Keys. Standing in a small parkland, the hall is a large early-19th-century house situated about a mile west of the wood. Built around 1823 for Dr Alexander Mather who held a small estate at Elvington; Dr Mather had a partnership with Dr William Belcombe at a private asylum known as 'The Retreat' at Clifton near York

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
