Givendale Wood, North Yorkshire - Over 24 ½ acres, £149,000

Givendale Wood

To reach Givendale Wood, park next to the entrance gate off the Troutsdale lane and follow an ancient, sunken track up the bank of the dale, verdant with ferns, sorrel, foxgloves, mosses and old lichen-encrusted stumps. The track sides are cloaked with a wide variety of native trees; rowans, holly, cherry, goat willow, birch and a number of large sycamore trees.

Gaining height and rounding the bend at the top of the bank, the track straightens out and emerges onto very attractive and pristine moorland. To the left is the heather and bilberry covered plateau at the top of Troutsdale, a triangle of quite level landscape scattered with pine and birch trees. This fascinating part of the ancient North York Moors, is criss-crossed with old field patterns, hidden beneath the mattress of heath-land plants. 50 metres on the left from here is the ride-stop entrance; the northern point of Givendale Wood.

Wandering south through the heather from the ride-stop, toward the more dense tree cover at the top of the bank, the visitor will find a rustic bench close to a large multi-trunk pine. It is here that the ascent becomes so worthwhile as the splendid view of beautiful Troutsdale is revealed.

A short distance to the east, still on the bank top, there is a remarkable spreading oak. The horizontal branches of this characterful tree would make the perfect location for a tree house or lookout with its own majestic view of the dale. It is easy to imagine that the view over this landscape has not changed in decades, if not hundreds of years.

Warblers, blackbirds, wrens and other birdlife are all quite at home amid the young larch and other native trees on the hillside. Berries as well as evergreen cover is plentiful here, supporting wildlife through the seasons. As well as a very diverse invertebrate population, larger mammal visitors pass through too; roe deer browse some of the self-set trees and bed down amongst the ferns.

Givendale Wood is a magical woodland, full of wildlife, diversity and due to its size, opportunity for almost any activity from further planting to increase yet further the diversity that already exists, to sympathetic timber felling for special projects or domestic firewood. The space within the wood allows a great deal of privacy and escape from the outside world for any number of adventures and discovery for all ages and interests.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
