Marjorie's Wood, Nottinghamshire - Over 5 ½ acres, £62,540

Marjorie's Wood

Marjorie's Wood is an attractive and productive woodland comprising of an area of planted beech in the southern section while to the north, native hardwoods predominate with some spruce and pine. The trees are developing very well, growing into tall and straight specimens of good volume. Also growing amongst these are many large lime trees, many of them coppiced with multiple stems.

Slender birch and ash trees are common and their long poles are ideal for gathering some good quality firewood to heat the home. Rare coppiced stools of elm are also dotted through the wood: this is the larval food plant for the elusive white letter hairstreak butterfly, a species that has become increasingly rare since the 1970’s with the decline of elm in the UK. In recent years the white letter hairstreak population has been surveyed in the wood by a local conservation group.

A seasonal stream runs down the western boundary to join a larger water course and wetland at the northern edge of the wood. Both of these water courses are largely seasonal and have little water flowing in the drier months, however there are small pools that are retained and act as reservoirs for beds of watercress (do not eat unless cooked!).

Lower in the woodland, there is a greater feeling of space, the trees have a wide spread and more sunlight reaches the floor. Spruce trees mingle with oak, birch and ash and coppice grown trees such as hawthorn and elder sit with patches of blackberry beneath – all great food plants for birds as they fatten up for winter. This type of woodland provides excellent all round habitat for our larger woodland wildlife too: muntjac tracks can also be seen around the wood.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
