Saggar Wood - SOLD, Yorkshire - About 6¾ acres, £52,000

Saggar Wood - SOLD

Description: Growing on a sunny south-west facing slope close to Sheffield, Saggar Wood is semi-natural ancient woodland. The name Saggar is a traditional word for the clay containers used to protect pottery during the firing process and they are made from the fire clay found throughout the area.

A walk through the wood will lead you to discover small natural clearings which are level and could be used for camping or wildlife observation. Also to be found are the tall straight white trunks of a number of birch glades with patches of bilberry and bracken. Large rocks are randomly spread amongst the old oak coppice and add intrigue! Around the woodland and adding to the diversity are a number of sweet chestnut trees. Seedlings from these are quite frequent, no doubt their propagation has been aided by the resident squirrel population. Other tree species are also growing around the wood and these include ash, willow and a scattering of rowan. The combination of species growing here make for ideal wildlife habitat: all three types of British woodpeckers can be observed and roe deer also pass through the wood.

Access: Is from Oughtibridge Lane along a shared track up to the wood and this shared track continues along the top of the wood. Another shared track runs down along the south western boundary - under the electricity power line. There is a clearing off this - through the 'ride stop' - giving access into the woodland. Purchasers will be provided with a key to the shared main access gate.

History: Saggar Wood is part of Great Hollins and Beeley Wood which has a long history closely connected with the steel industry in the area. Ganister, a type of sandstone which was used to make fire bricks to line the blast furnaces in the works located in the valley bottom, was mined using the drift mine method. This practice ceased in the early 1900's. Looking further back into history, monks from Ecclesfield Priory were permitted to graze their livestock in the woodland as early as 1161.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
