Wharton Wood - SOLD, North Yorkshire - Nearly 4 ¼ acres, £45,000

Wharton Wood - SOLD

Set amongst attractive countryside, Wharton Wood is part of a larger wooded area known as Hodberhill Plantation. The plantation part of the name suggests that softwood trees were planted here, as with many older woodland sites, but Wharton Wood has a much more mixed wood feel to it than plantation suggests: it is very well balanced and full of diversity. To the southern edge there is a fringe of well grown softwoods such as hemlock, spruce and some western red cedar, while to the north of this strip, the remaining part of the wood is comprised mostly of hardwoods, notably oak, ash and the occasional sycamore, planted with some larch.

Many of the trees, both hard and softwoods are quite large and would make some extremely useful timber; particularly large are the characterful ash trees along the boundary. Beneath the tall canopy of the protective larger trees is a shrub layer of coppiced hazel stools, with many useful poles for garden or craft use.

Elder bushes also crop up here and there, providing foraging opportunities in late summer for resident woodland bird and mammal life. Wildlife abounds and if you pause for long, you’re likely to see and hear buzzards overhead, flocks of tits moving through the trees and a robin or two coming to see if you’ve disturbed some insects.

Around the edge of the Wharton Wood, remnants of an old hedge are growing and through the gaps there are views across the pasture and arable land beyond. The wood offers a great base for exploring the scenic countryside in this quiet but beautiful part of North Yorkshire. Between the two national parks of the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, the wood is close to the market towns of Northallerton and Richmond, the latter with its striking 11th Century Castle set atop high banks at the side of the River Swale.

Wharton Wood takes its name from Thomas Wharton, Second Baron Wharton, who owned the lands of the Kiplin Hall Estate in the 1550s.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
