Widdowson Wood, Derbyshire - About 5 ¼ acres, £45,000

Widdowson Wood

Well growing, tall and straight pines mingle with some larch, covering about half the area of this productive woodland. Beneath these maturing trees, a flourishing layer of self-seeded saplings is emerging, remnants of the greater historic forest around Widdowson Wood. Oak, rowan and birch are all doing well and given light and space these species will quickly recolonize areas where the softwood trees are cleared, if so desired. Sensitive thinning would promote this diversification and also provide a sustainable supply of domestic fire wood.

The remainder of Widdowson Wood is mostly broadleaved trees with a more open woodland floor – a stunning carpet of bluebells in the Spring. The deciduous mix has quite a selection of straight growing oaks, some attaining a good size, as well as beech and sycamore trees.

Access to the wood is via a shared track, that runs along the southern boundary. From the ride-stop entrance it is a short walk through the fresh-scented pines to the broadleaved area of the woodland. Along the northern edge is an open swaithe of ground, filled with foxgloves and grasses with views across Birdholme Brook and the golf course which lies beyond, frequented by many bird species, the area is filled with their song and calls.

The Peak District National Park was the first of the English National Parks, established in 1951 to protect its stunningly beautiful scenery for leisure and enjoyment. Laying at the southern tip of the Pennines, the name is derived from ‘peac’ meaning hill and the Park’s symbol is a millstone, made from gritstone that is over 300 million years old.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
