Wood Side - SOLD, North Yorkshire - About 2 acres, £29,000

Wood Side - SOLD
Wood Side - SOLD
North Yorkshire

A small and peaceful pine wood, alongside a small beck.

Wood Side is on level ground at the southern edge of Brafferton Spring Wood and a stream, Sun Beck, (about 6 feet wide and a foot deep) runs all year round along the southern boundary of the wood.

The mature trees are nearly all Corsican Pine, planted in the 1960s with some broadleaved trees growing alongside the stream. Beneath the tall canopy, some coppiced hazel grows along with blackthorn, sycamore and elder. Plants that thrive at ground level are typical of an old forest; ferns, honeysuckle, blackberry irises and wood sorrel all enjoy the dappled shade of the woodland floor.

There’s a pleasant outlook across the beck over grazing pasture with hedgerows, a very tranquil scene in a peaceful corner of Yorkshire. A bench is ideally situated to take in the serenity of the surroundings and perhaps listen to buzzards calling overhead observing treecreepers as they feed on insects in the pines

Part of a larger wood known as Brafferton Spring, Wood Side has woodland to three sides and is easily reached by vehicle along a good track and then on foot from a parking area, a short distance, on a grassy ride filled with wildflowers.

The local village of Brafferton was originally named after the broad ford over the River Swale, it has been documented since the Domesday Book. Victorian records cite Brafferton Spring as ‘a noted fox covert’. The word ‘spring’ has been used in Yorkshire to mean an area of coppice and it is likely that, rather than being an indication of local water features, the woods were the coppice for the village of Brafferton, supplying fencing, building and firewood materials.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
